What is Angle Sign?

Hey there! Do you know what an angle is? Well, when two lines meet at a point, they form an angle. The point where they meet is called the vertex. You can see angels all around you in daily objects like chairs, scissors, pizza slices, and fingers. The angle sign is simply two lines that meet at a common vertex. So, now you know what angles and angle signs are!

Properties of Angles

  • Measure: The angles on one side add up to 180 degrees while the angels all around a point add up to 360 degrees.
  • Structure: An angle has a point called the vertex, and two rays that form its sides.
  • Reflex Angle: It is an angle which is bigger than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees.
  • Linear Pairs: Opposite angles that add up to 180 degrees are called linear pairs.
  • Vertically Opposed Angles: When two lines are parallel, the opposite pairs of angles are called vertically opposed angles.

Types of Angles

Let's learn about different types of angles and their measurements.

  • Acute Angle

An Acute Angle is an angle that's less than 90 degrees, like 60 degrees or 50 degrees.

  • Right Angle

A Right Angle measures exactly 90 degrees, so it looks like a square corner.

  • Obtuse Angle

Obtuse Angles measure between 90 degrees to 180 degrees. Examples are angles at 120 degrees, 150 degrees, etc.

  • Straight Angle

A Straight Angle measures exactly 180 degrees, so it looks like a straight line.

  • Reflex Angle

A Reflex Angle measures between 180 degrees to 360 degrees, like angles at 200 degrees, 260 degrees, etc.

  • Reflex Angle: Complete Angle

A Complete Angle measures exactly 360 degrees, which is like a full circle.

Angle Based on the Rotation

Angles can be classified into two types based on their direction of measurement or rotation.

Positive Angle

A positive angle is an angle that is measured in a counterclockwise direction, starting from the initial position. It is like moving forward, from 0 degrees towards larger angles.

Negative Angle
A negative angle is an angle measured in a clockwise direction, starting from the initial position. It is like moving backward, from 0 degrees towards smaller angles.

For example, imagine you are standing at 0 degrees and want to move to an angle of 60 degrees.

If you move in a counterclockwise direction, then the angle would be positive (+60 degrees). But if you move in a clockwise direction, then the angle would be negative (-300 degrees).

Pair of Angles

When two angles come together, they can form different types of pairs based on their relationship with each other.

  • Complementary angles

Complementary angles are like best friends - they add up to make a perfect 180 degree angle. So, if one angle is 70 degrees, the other angle must be 110 degrees to make a complementary pair.

  • Supplementary angles

Supplementary angles are also friends, but they add up to make a right angle of 90 degrees. For example, if one angle is 40 degrees, the other angle must be 50 degrees to make a supplementary pair.

  • Adjacent angles

Adjacent angles are like neighbors - they share a common arm and vertex. For example, if you draw two lines that intersect each other, the angles next to each other are adjacent angles.

  • Linear pairs
Linear pairs are like partners in crime - they add up to make a straight line of 180 degrees. If you draw a straight line and put two angles on either side of it, they are a linear pair.
  • Vertically opposite angles

Vertically opposite angles are like mirror images of each other. If two lines intersect each other, the angles across from each other are called vertically opposite angles. They are always equal in measure.

An angle is formed when two lines meet at a point called the vertex. It can be positive or negative, depending on the direction of rotation. There are different types of angles like acute, obtuse, right, reflex, complete, and straight angles. An angle has parts like vertex, arms, initial side, and reference side. So now you know what an angle is and the different types and parts it has!
