Introduction
In this lesson, we will learn how to multiply big 3-digit numbers with smaller 1-digit, 2-digit, and 3-digit numbers. We'll put the numbers in the right places so we can multiply them easily. It might be a bit tricky when we multiply by 2 and 3-digit numbers, but it's super simple to multiply a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number!
We will explore 3 different ways to multiply 3-digit numbers: with 1-digit numbers, 2-digit numbers, and 3-digit numbers. We will learn how to group and not group numbers while doing these cool maths problems. By following step-by-step instructions and solving examples, you'll become an expert at these multiplication skills and can answer questions with ease.
This exciting lesson will help you do really well in your math class, making your grades even better! So, let's get started and have fun multiplying!
How to Use 3-Digit Multiplication
3-Digit Multiplication is like a super-fun math game where we multiply big 3-digit numbers with other numbers. When we play this game, we line up the numbers in special columns based on their place values - like ones, tens, and hundreds.
As we get ready to multiply, we put the bigger number on the top and the smaller number right below it. The top number is called the "multiplicand" and the bottom number is called the "multiplier." Don't worry if those words sound tricky - just remember that the top number is the one we're multiplying, and the bottom number is what we're multiplying it by.
Once we have the numbers all lined up in their special columns based on their place values, we're ready to play the multiplying game! We start by multiplying the bottom number (the multiplier) with every digit of the top number (the multiplicand) one at a time, beginning from the left.
First, we multiply the ones digit, then move on to the tens digit, and finally, the hundreds digit. When we're all done, the final answer we get is our awesome multiplication result!
Examples
Example 1: Multiply 123 by 2
Solution:
123 multiplied by 2,
123 x 2= 246
Answer: 246
Example 2: Multiply 345 by 11
Solution:
345 multiplied by 1 - ones place,
345 multiplied by 1 - tens place, moved one position left,
so, 345 x 11=3795
Answer: 3795
Example 3: Multiply 152 by 23
Solution:
304 (152 multiplied by 3 - ones place),
456 (152 multiplied by 2 - tens place, moved one position left),
so, 152 x 23=3496
Answer: 3496
Practice these examples and have fun! Remember, keep trying and you'll get better at 3-digit multiplication.
