What is prime number
A prime number is a whole number bigger than one that can only be divided by itself and one, meaning it has just two parts (factors). A number with more than two parts is called a composite number. We don't count zero, one, or any numbers smaller than one as prime numbers. The first prime number is two, because it can only be divided by itself (2) and one.
How to Find the Prime Number
In order to find out if a number is a prime number, we need to check its parts. If it only has two parts – the number itself and 1 – then it's a prime number. Here are the steps to check if a number is prime:
- First, try dividing the number by 2. If it's perfectly divisible by 2, it's not a prime number.
- If it's not divisible by 2, try dividing by 3.
- Keep trying bigger numbers up to the square root of the number you're checking.
- If the number isn't perfectly divisible by any of these bigger numbers, then it's a prime number. Otherwise, it's not prime.
Composite Number
A composite number is a whole number that has more than two parts to it. We can group numbers into prime numbers, which only have two parts (factors), and composite numbers, which have more than two parts. On this page, we'll learn about the difference between prime and composite numbers, the smallest composite number, and special ones called odd composite numbers. Two is a unique number because it's the only even prime number, while there are lots of odd composite numbers.

At the beginning, check if (8+5) is divisible by 2 or 3. We have 8+5 equals 13, which is not divisible by 2 or 3, so we continue with the next steps.
Step 1: Take the square root of 85. The square root of 85 is about 9.22.
Step 2: Choose prime numbers less than 9 and see if any of these numbers divide 85 completely.
Step 3: We find out that the number 5 divides 85 perfectly. So, 85 is divisible by 5, and we get more than two factors other than 1 and 85 itself. Therefore, we can say that 85 is not a prime number.
So, 85 is not a prime number because it has more than two factors, which goes against the definition of prime numbers.
